Land Reclamation by Singapore in and around the Straits of Johor (Malaysia v. Singapore)

The Permanent Court of Arbitration acted as registry in this arbitration between Malaysia and Singapore. The case concerned land reclamation by Singapore in and around the Straits of Johor and was instituted by Malaysia on July 4, 2003 pursuant to Article 287 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Article 1 of UNCLOS Annex VII. The land reclamation works were alleged to infringe Malaysia's rights in the area. An order for provisional measures was issued by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). At the Parties' joint request, the Arbitral Tribunal rendered an award in the terms set out in a Settlement Agreement which was entered into by the Parties on April 26, 2005. It did so by attaching the text of the Settlement Agreement as an annex to the award.
