In 2023, the Permanent Court of Arbitration administered 246 cases, 82 of which were initiated that year, including 7 inter-State arbitrations, 2 other inter-State proceedings, 122 investor-State arbitrations arising under bilateral/multilateral investment treaties or national investment laws, 110 arbitrations arising under contracts involving a State, intergovernmental organization, or other State entity, and 5 other proceedings.

The Secretary-General received 58 requests relating to appointing authority services.

In 2022, the Permanent Court of Arbitration administered 204 cases, 50 of which were initiated that year, including 4 inter-State arbitrations, 112 investor-State arbitrations, and 88 cases arising under contracts involving a State, intergovernmental organization, or other public entity.

The Secretary-General received 50 requests relating to appointing authority services.

The Secretary-General received 49 requests relating to appointing authority services.

Annual Report 2020

In 2020, the Permanent Court of Arbitration administered 211 cases, a record 59 of which were initiated that year, including 7 inter-State arbitrations, 126 investor-State arbitrations, 74 cases arising under contracts involving a State, intergovernmental organization, or other public entity, and 4 other disputes. The Secretary-General received 42 requests relating to appointing authority services.

Annual Report 2019

In the course of 2019, the PCA’s International Bureau provided registry services in 199 cases, 49 of which were initiated the same year. Additionally, the PCA Secretary-General received 39 requests in 2019 relating to the appointing authority mechanism under the Arbitration Rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) .

2019 also saw the PCA continue its engagement with the international community to increase cooperation and improve access to its services and expertise. To expand the PCA’s ability to conduct proceedings outside its headquarters in The Hague, the PCA concluded new Host Country Agreements with Ireland and Paraguay, as well as new Cooperation Agreements with the Japan International Dispute Resolution Centre, the New York International Arbitration Centre, and the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission / Shanghai International Arbitration Centre. Additionally, the PCA opened a permanent office in Buenos Aires in October 2019.

In the course of 2018, the PCA’s International Bureau provided registry services in 190 cases, including 5 interstate disputes; 112 investor-State arbitrations; 70 cases arising under contracts involving a State or other public entity or public interest; 1 arbitration between a private entity and a State arising under an arbitration agreement in accordance with the PCA Arbitration Rules 2012; and 2 arbitrations between global labor union federations and private entities arising under a fire and building safety agreement. Additionally, the PCA Secretary-General received 49 requests in 2018 relating to its appointing authority services.

Over the course of 2017, the Permanent Court of Arbitration administered 160 cases, 41 of which were initiated that year, including 8 interstate disputes; 97 investor-State arbitrations arising under bilateral/multilateral investment treaties and national investment laws; and 55 arbitrations arising under contracts involving a State or other public entity or public interest. The PCA also received 47 requests relating to its appointing authority services.

The PCA also received 49 requests relating to its appointing authority services.

Over the course of 2015, the Permanent Court of Arbitration administered 138 cases, 42 of which were initiated in 2015, including 8 inter-State arbitrations; 76 investor-State arbitrations arising under bilateral/multilateral investment treaties and national investment laws; 44 arbitrations arising under contracts involving a State, intergovernmental organization, or other public entity; and 7 other disputes. The PCA also received 42 requests relating to its appointing authority services.

With its accession to the 1907 Hague Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes on 22 March 2015, the Republic of Georgia became the 117th Contracting Party of the PCA.
