International Investment Arbitration Conference in Kuwait

Last week, on 17–18 February 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) co-organized an “International Investment Arbitration Conference” in Kuwait City in association with the Kuwaiti Ministry of Justice, under the patronage of H.E. Prime Minister Jaber Al Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah, and in the presence of H.E. Minister of Justice Yaqoub Al Sane. The Conference was co-sponsored by the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), the University of Kuwait, as well as the Kuwait Lawyers Association. The Conference drew the support of various organizations including UNCITRAL, the League of Arab States, the BCDR-AAA, the GCC Commercial Arbitration Centre, as well as other regional arbitral institutions. In addition, there were over 30 local, regional, and international experts who addressed a wide variety of contemporary issues in international investment arbitration.

At the margins of the Conference, the PCA and the Kuwaiti Commercial Arbitration Centre (KCAC) entered into a cooperation agreement. The KCAC is affiliated to the KCCI, which is one of the oldest institutions in Kuwait, representing its business community prior to its independence. The PCA and the KCAC agreed to cooperate on matters such as technical assistance and training as well as the mutual use of their respective hearing facilities.
