The Permanent Court of Arbitration is pleased to announce the publication of its 2024 Annual Report

The Permanent Court of Arbitration (the “PCA”) is proud to announce the publication of its 2024 Annual Report, marking a milestone year during which the PCA celebrated its 125th anniversary while continuing to expand its global role in international dispute resolution.

In 2024, the PCA administered 243 cases, including 51 newly initiated proceedings—demonstrating its continued relevance and adaptability in a rapidly evolving legal landscape.

The 2024 Annual Report also highlights the PCA’s 125th Anniversary celebrations. At the heart of these celebrations was the Third Congress of the Members of the Court, convened from 12 to 14 June 2024 at the Peace Palace in The Hague. The Congress brought together 344 participants representing 109 countries, and reaffirmed the PCA’s enduring and evolving role in the peaceful settlement of international disputes. The programme included a series of side events addressing key themes such as gender representation, regional contributions to dispute resolution, and the future of global arbitration.

A particularly meaningful milestone in 2024 was the accession of the Republic of Vanuatu and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste as the PCA’s 123rd  and 124th  Contracting Parties. Their membership reflects both the international community’s confidence in the PCA’s mission and services, and its commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes through arbitration.

In addition, through the entry into force of the PCA’s Host Country Agreement with the Republic of Paraguay, the PCA further expanded its capacity to readily hold hearings and meetings around the globe, in keeping with its mission to be accessible “to all” and “at all times”.

In the course of 2024, the PCA’s International Bureau provided registry services in 243 cases, 51 of which were initiated that year.

The cases administered over the course of 2024 involved parties from over 118 States. In these cases, at least one of the disputing parties came from each of the United Nations Regional Groups in the proportions shown below.

Additionally, the PCA received 51 requests relating to its appointing authority services.
