Cross-Examination Moot wins GAR Award during the 2022 Paris Arbitration Week

The Permanent Court of Arbitration is delighted to announce that the Cross-Examination Moot recently won the Award for the Best Development in Arbitration at the Global Arbitration Review (GAR) 2022 Awards Ceremony held during the Paris Arbitration Week.

The Cross-Examination Moot is the first moot on cross-examination in international arbitration. The inaugural edition of the moot, which took place remotely in November 2021, featured participants from 40 universities spanning over 20 countries across the world, hailing from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. In addition to this, participants put their skills to the test in front of over 200 distinguished arbitrators and arbitration practitioners.

Participants in the moot tackled a dispute over the construction of a wind farm, specifically focusing on issues of delays, damages, and the scope of the construction works. Participants were afforded an opportunity to deepen their oral advocacy skills by cross-examining the commercial managers that negotiated the disputed contract, the chiefs of operations that supervised the works, and economic experts.

This fact scenario that lay at the heart of the Cross-Examination Moot was prepared by members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s staff, including Martin Doe, Julian Bordaçahar, Juan Ignacio Massun, Danielle González Reyes, and Pia Ruggieri. Compass Lexecon was in charge of preparing the damages section of the moot problem. The Permanent Court of Arbitration was pleased to be able to contribute to this innovative educational endeavour as part of its commitment to the development of a new generation of arbitrators and arbitration practitioners.

The Cross-Examination Moot is the product of the joint efforts of Sciences Po Law School, Queen Mary University of London, New York University, and the National University of Singapore. The Cross-Examination Moot’s board of directors comprises Diego P. Fernández Arroyo, Alexis Mourre, Yas Banifatemi, Loukas Mistelis, Sophie Nappert, Franco Ferrari, Samaa Haridi, Gary F. Bell, Jean Kalicki, and Eleonora Coelho; and its Executive Directors are Francisco Amallo and Ezequiel Vetulli.

Congratulations to the entire team behind the Cross-Examination Moot.
