PCA holds hearing in Singapore

In early December 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) held a hearing at the facilities of Maxwell Chambers in Singapore, in the arbitration between Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Philippines) and the Republic of the Philippines.

The arbitration, for which the PCA acts as registry, is conducted pursuant to the 1976 UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. The Tribunal is composed of Mr. V.V. Veeder QC, Justice (Retired) Roberto A. Abad, and Mr. Kap-You (Kevin) Kim, who acts as the Presiding Arbitrator.

While the PCA’s hearing facilities at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, are available to host meetings and hearings in PCA-administered proceedings, the PCA frequently conducts proceedings at other venues. Proceedings in this matter were held at Maxwell Chambers pursuant to the PCA’s Regional Facility Agreement with Singapore, which allows parties in dispute to take full advantage of the flexibility and efficiency of PCA-administered proceedings in Singapore.

The PCA is currently administering 121 pending cases, around a third of which involve one or more parties from the Asia Pacific Region Group.
