PCA Publishes Contribution to 2023 Report of United Nations Secretary-General on Oceans and the Law of the Sea

The Permanent Court of Arbitration is pleased to publish its Contribution dated 16 June 2023 to the Report of the United Nations Secretary-General on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (the “Contribution”), available for download in PDF format here.
The PCA’s annual Contribution provides information on the latest developments at the PCA in the area of ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
The PCA has unique expertise in the administration of inter-State dispute resolution proceedings involving oceans and the law of the sea. To date, it has acted as registry in 14 of the 15 arbitrations conducted pursuant to Annex VII of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (“UNCLOS”). It has administered the first (and, to date, only) compulsory conciliation pursuant to Annex V of UNCLOS, as well as a number of dispute resolution proceedings involving the law of the sea brought under other legal instruments. Additionally, the PCA participates in outreach, education and collaborations relating to the law of the sea. The Contribution provides a summary of these initiatives in the last year. The PCA’s reports for earlier periods are available here.
