The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) has concluded a two-day hearing in the Republic of Mauritius in an arbitration between an African company and an African State. The hearing marks the first occasion on which the PCA has held hearings in Mauritius under the 2009 PCA-Mauritius Host Country Agreement.

PCA Responds to Queries on Arbitral Legitimacy

The PCA was recently asked by ICCA to answer a questionnaire on arbitral legitimacy and expound on this subject at the 2014 ICCA Congress in Miami. The questionnaire covered topics such as the participation of arbitration users and practitioners based in developing arbitral jurisdictions, the role of institutions in arbitral appointment and decision-making processes, and the effects of rising costs in international arbitration.

The Republic of Mauritius v. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The Arbitral Tribunal constituted in the arbitration between the Republic of Mauritius and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland pursuant to Article 287 and Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (the "Convention") conducted a hearing from 22 April to 9 May 2014 on the Tribunal’s jurisdiction to consider the claims brought by Mauritius and on the merits of those claims.

Cooperation Agreement with the Centre for Arbitration and Conciliation of the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá

At a ceremony held on 12 May 2014, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and the Centre for Arbitration and Conciliation of the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá (CAC-CCB) entered into a formal cooperation agreement. This agreement will strengthen ties between the CAC-CCB and the PCA. Each institution will be able to hold hearings and meetings at the other’s premises and will assist with the arrangement of local support services for such events.

PCA lawyers active at ICCA Biannual Congress and ASIL-ILA Annual Meeting

6-9 April 2014, Miami. Several members of the PCA’s legal team participated in the biannual congress of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) held from 6-9 April 2014 in Miami. The Congress was attended by over 1000 international arbitration professionals and was dedicated to the theme of “Legitimacy: Myths, Realities and Challenges.”

Bilcon of Delaware et al. v. Canada

Beginning on October 22, 2013, the hearing on jurisdiction and liability in an arbitration between Bilcon of Delaware et al. and the Government of Canada will be streamed live on the website of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). The arbitral proceedings are being conducted pursuant to Chapter Eleven of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The PCA acts as registry in the arbitration.

Brooks W. Daly Appointed Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau

At a seminar hosted by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) on 11 October 2013 to commemorate the centenary of the Peace Palace, Mr. Brooks W. Daly was appointed an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau. The award was presented to Mr. Daly by H.E. Judge Willem Haak, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands.

The PCA Peace Palace Centenary Seminar, October 11, 2013

The PCA will hold a seminar on October 11, 2013, for invitees only, to commemorate the centenary of the Peace Palace. The Peace Palace was constructed, through the generous donation of Andrew
Carnegie, in order to house the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Formally inaugurated on August 28, 1913, and maintained ever since by the Carnegie Foundation, the Peace Palace has come to be recognized globally as the icon of international peace and justice.
